Windowsアプリケーションには付きものの「Browse」というボタン名の日本語訳は、「参照」で定着していますが、文章の中のbrowseという動詞も「参照する」と訳してしまって果たして通じるのでしょうか？ 以前書いたこともありますが、「アプリケーションがインストールされているフォルダーを参照して選択します」はまだよいとして、「アプリケーションがインストールされているフォルダーを参照します」で通じるのでしょうか。パソコン教室か何かで、インストラクターが「では先ほどのフォルダーを参照してください」と指示したら受講生はいったいどうすれば？
マイクロソフトがBrowseの訳を「参照」に決定するまでにどういう議論があったかは知りませんが、英語のドキュメントでbrowseをどのように使うかは、『Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications』に書かれていました。

Browse is when the user manually looks for something in a folder, tree structure, or Internet site.
Find is when the user instructs the computer to search for something, such as a specific file, object, computer, Web site, server, term, or phrase.
手動で見つけるのがbrowseで、自動的に見つけるのがfindということですね。実際の英文でも「browse for the folder」や「browse to the folder」などと書かれている場合は、「フォルダーを選択します」と訳さないと後の文にうまく続かないことが多いと思います。「Browseボタンをクリックして」という操作が必要だったら、そのことを伝えなければなりませんね。「参照画面でフォルダーを選択します」というのはどうでしょうか。
