Microsoft Azureのトップページ（https://azure.microsoft.com/ja-jp/）を見たら、また大見出しとその直後の説明文が英語のままになっているのですが（日本語版だけでなく他の言語も）、先日見たバージョンで気になっていたことを取り上げてみたいと思います。
それは、「従量課金制で今すぐ始めましょう」のところです。英語版（https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/）では「Get started now with pay-as-you-go pricing.」と書かれています。
このpay-as-you-goの日本語訳は「従量課金制」でよいのでしょうか。Microsoftが公開している用語集（各言語の用語の検索とダウンロード - Microsoft | ランゲージ ポータル）でも、次のような訳が登録されています。
Pay-As-You-Go
従量課金制
The pricing tier in which the user pays only for what is used, with no minimums, scaling up or down on the fly.
Skype Creditの文脈では「プリペイドの」となるようですが。
Pay As You Go
Pertaining to a way for paying for Skype paid features in which the user pays with Skype Credit at the moment he/she uses the feature.
クラウドコンピューティングという分野でのpay-as-you-goの意味は、英語圏のネット記事でも「charges based on usage」と説明されているので、その点では「従量課金」です。ではなぜ、comsumption-basedと言わずにpay-as-you-goという表現を使うのか。
Pay-as-you-go cloud computing (PAYG cloud computing) is a payment method for cloud computing that charges based on usage. The practice is similar to that of utility bills, using only resources that are needed.
Microsoftのクラウドコンピューティングが従量課金制であることは、使う側にとってメリットなのでしょうか。使う量に応じた料金計算は当たり前ですが、電話料金と同じで、たくさん使う場合は定額制のほうが安心かもしれません。
上記の記事の引用部分の続きは、次のように書かれています。
One major benefit of the pay-as-you-go model, which is a form of consumption-based pricing, is that there are no wasted resources. Users only pay for what they use rather than a certain amount of resources that may or may not be used. With traditional enterprise design, users architect data storage to handle the maximum workload. But with the public cloud, the pay-as-you-go method charges the organization only for what it stores, provisions or uses.
あるリソースが必要になった場合に、従来はその最大使用量を見越して購入していたが、それだとリソースの一部は使われず無駄になる可能性があるのに対し、パブリッククラウドならば実際に使う分だけを支払えばよいということですね。
Microsoft Azureのトップページでも「Get started now with pay-as-you-go pricing.」に続いて「There's no upfront commitment—cancel anytime.」と書かれているように、upfront commitmentがなくていつでもcancelできることが、このpay-as-you-go pricingのメリットなのだと思います。この「実際に使う分だけを支払う」をうまく日本語で表現する方法はないものでしょうか。
